Choosing the right members for a pastor search committee is one of the first major decisions a church makes in the search process. Before the committee ever reviews resumes or interviews candidates, the church must think carefully about who should help lead the process.
A strong search committee does not simply represent different opinions in the church. It should be made up of spiritually mature, trustworthy people who can serve the whole congregation with wisdom, humility, and prayerful discernment.
Look for Spiritual Maturity
The most important qualification is spiritual maturity. Search committee members should be people who walk with the Lord, love the church, value Scripture, and understand the weight of calling a pastor.
This is not a popularity contest. The church should avoid choosing people simply because they are well-known, outspoken, or influential. The process requires people who are humble, prayerful, teachable, and committed to seeking God’s direction.
Choose People Who Can Work Together
A pastor search committee must be able to have honest conversations without becoming divided. Members should be able to listen carefully, speak respectfully, and work toward unity.
Disagreement will happen. That is not always a problem. But the team needs people who can handle disagreement with grace and maturity.
Represent the Church Wisely
The committee should reflect the church, but representation should not be the only goal. It can be helpful to include people from different generations, ministry areas, and backgrounds within the church. However, every person selected should still meet the standard of spiritual maturity and trustworthiness.
Avoid Personal Agendas
Search committee members must be willing to set aside personal preferences for the good of the church. The goal is not to find “my kind of pastor.” The goal is to prayerfully seek the pastor God would have lead the church.
Prepare the Team Before the Search Begins
Once the committee is chosen, training matters. A prepared team will understand its role, communicate well, protect confidentiality, and move forward with greater clarity and unity. Calling a pastor is too important to approach unprepared.
